SEED stands for Sharing and Enabling Environmental Data. Our web-based portal supports community and government in NSW to find and share environmental data that is open, standardised, transparent and accessible.
What can you find in SEED?
SEED supports everyone to find, assess, access, analyse and use environmental data and information. You can:
- Find information via the SEED map or the dataset catalogue with simple search, advanced search and spatial search in a local area.
- Assess information based on data standards and principles, metadata, data quality statements and various software and information formats.
- Access information using tools and functions that support users to preview and download dataset catalogues, view data on the SEED map, export data from the SEED map and save the SEED map.
- Analyse SEED map data with functions like the layer intersect tool, mining rehabilitation layer tools and by adding your own map data.
- Use and see how others are using SEED data with citations.
What information is on the SEED portal?
The SEED Map
| This interactive digital mapping tool lets users view, overlay and analyse thousands of open-source environmental data layers across locations in NSW. No special software or scientific skills needed. |
Datasets | Collections of open-source environmental, geospatial and administrative information. Datasets span many:
|
Dataset catalogue | A searchable index of all data and information files and map layers and links to information. |
SEED website pages (or the web interface) | This includes help guides, topic pages, case studies and insight pages and news and updates pages. |
The SEED portal is a data repository, not a database service. This means:
- We provide access to environmental data to download
- We provide access to spatial map services.
However, we do not host, manage or offer direct access to databases.
Where does information come from?
SEED data comes from:
- Syndicated data created and maintained in the DCCEEW (Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water), Department of Planning Housing and Infrastructure Information Asset Register (DPHI IAR), and
- Data providers who share and maintain data directly in SEED.
- Integrated metadata statements and resources from other open data portals.
Data providers are responsible for keeping their datasets and information up to date. SEED's role is to offer a trusted, central repository where data is easy to find, access and reuse.
