Our mission

SEED is the NSW Government’s central platform for Sharing and Enabling Environmental Data. Developed through a collaborative effort across government for the people of NSW, SEED brings trusted environmental data, tools and insights together in one place. By making environmental information easier to access, understand and use, SEED empowers evidence-based decision-making, supports transparency and helps communities, researchers, industry and government create better outcomes for NSW’s environment and future.

SEED mission

Why we exist

Why was SEED developed?

SEED was developed in partnership with more than 50 end-user groups who identified the need for a more accessible, integrated and user-centred approach to environmental data. In response, SEED was designed to bring together powerful search, visualisation, interactive mapping and content management capabilities into a single platform. By combining trusted data with context, guidance and modern digital tools, SEED transforms complex environmental information into actionable insights, helping users discover, understand and apply data with confidence.

Data for everyone

SEED is for everyone who wants to:

  • learn more about the NSW environment in a particular area.
  • see the data that is being used in environmental decision making.
  • manage land and water to ensure its long-term sustainability.
  • access data for research and advisory purposes.
  • help protect our environmental and cultural heritage.
  • find out how data is being used.
  • contribute to open environmental data in NSW.
