What is a SEED data insight?
Data insights in SEED translate raw and complex environmental data into easy-to-understand data visualisations that help people make evidence-based decisions.
Examples of SEED data insights include:
| Interactive dashboards | Apply filters, ask specific questions of the data, and view trends over time. |
| Data and information visualisations | Charts, graphs and other information that provide insightful analysis of the raw data. |
| Visual mapping | Web-based spatial maps with data layers that support data visualisation, overlay and comparison. |
Publishing data insights to SEED enables other SEED users and data custodians to find and better understand environmental data and resources in NSW.
Publish your data insights on SEED
Before you begin
| Do you have the right tools? | You need a tool like Flourish, PowerBI, Tableau, ArcGIS Online or a web map (like the SEED Map) to create the data visualisation. These tools also generate and embed code to publish publicly (i.e. a link in an iframe). Contact SEED when you’re ready to embed the code. We will work with you to embed the data visualisation on a page in SEED. |
| Do your data insights meet requirements? | Ensure your data visualisation:
|
| Have you completed a metadata and data quality statement? | You’ll need to complete a metadata statement and data quality statement and link to or upload the raw data. These can be released at the same day or time as the data insight page if needed. |
| Is the raw data available to share? | It is best practice to provide access to the data used in the data visualisation. If applicable, create the raw data and upload it to the metadata record as resources. Data cannot be exported from public PowerBI dashboards |
How to add a data insight into SEED
- Define the page content requirements. For example:
- Description text
- Links to applicable data in SEED
- Specific instructions about how to use the data visualisation
- The URL to the data visualisation.
- Email the SEED team at [email protected] and provide them with:
- Your page content requirements and embed code for the data visualisation
- Specify a specific publish date, if applicable
- Links to the applicable metadata statements in SEED
- The SEED team will provide a draft of the data insight page for your review.
- Once your data insight is ready to publish:
- The metadata and data quality statements are published first
- The SEED team will link to and publish the data insight page.
